At just 18 years old, Andrea Yojana Xon Chitic, originally from the Caja de Agua village in Chiché, Quiché, has traversed a path full of challenges and learning experiences. Her story is a testament to resilience and the positive impact that development projects can have in rural communities.
Andrea grew up facing barriers that limited her opportunities. Despite her academic performance, her formal education ended in the third year of middle school when her parents decided she wouldn’t continue studying. “They believed that women don’t have many opportunities to get a job. It was very difficult for me to accept that because I always wanted to be someone in life,” recounts Andrea.
After a year of uncertainty about her future, a classmate told her about the Barbara Ford Peace Center project. Despite her mother’s initial doubts, Andrea insisted on participating. “My mom thought it might be a scam, but I knew it was an opportunity I couldn’t pass up. She finally let me attend, and it was the best thing that could have happened to me,” Andrea shares with a smile.
The project offered training in sewing and tailoring, as well as emotional healing circles and business planning workshops. Each session made a difference in her life. “The family healing circles helped me a lot. I was resentful toward my mom for not letting me keep studying, but upon reflection, I understood the importance of strengthening our relationships,” Andrea explains.
Andrea also found comfort and motivation in the group circles. “Listening to other women’s stories made me realize I wasn’t alone. We had all faced adversity, but together we learned to be strong and keep fighting for our dreams,” she remarks.
Moreover, the sessions with the Center’s psychologist were essential for overcoming moments of distress. “They helped me let go of the past and focus on my present and my future. Now I know why I get up every day, and that fills me with purpose,” Andrea affirms.
With the tools she acquired, Andrea not only has mastered technical skills but also has begun planning her own business. “The project opened doors for me to continue studying tailoring and sewing. Now my parents see that this can be a real opportunity, and they support me more,” she says proudly.
Her short-term goals include completing her training and graduating from the program. In the long term, she dreams of diversifying her skills and exploring new educational and professional opportunities. “I don’t want to rely on just one profession. Competition is fierce, and I want to have options to ensure my future,” explains Andrea.
“Sometimes we think our problems will simply be over, but healing circles and learning opportunities are crucial for relieving stress and finding purpose. I would recommend that all women take advantage of any opportunity to grow, because there is always something beyond adversity.”
